The Italian Open, known in Italian as Internazionali d’Italia, is a prestigious annual tennis tournament that takes place in Rome, Italy. Certainly, this exciting event takes place on clay courts at the Foro Italico and occurs during the second week of May. It is a significant part of the ATP Masters 1000 series on the ATP Tour and the WTA 1000 series on the WTA Tour, with both tours merging their events in 2011.

The tournament is set at the Foro Italico tennis complex. In sum, it features a vast area with 18 clay courts.  Altogether nine are for the Italian Open, while the others serve for practice.  Furthermore, the venue includes three main stadiums. First, the Stadio Centrale, rebuilt for the 2010 tournament and can accommodate 10,400 fans. Second, the Stadio Pietrangeli, which holds 3,500 spectators, and the third is the Grand Stand Arena.

The first Italian tennis championship was launched in 1930 at the Tennis Club in Milan, thanks to Count Alberto Bonacossa.   Bill Tilden and LilĂ Álvarez were the singles champions in that initial tournament.   As a matter of fact, the event continued in Milan until 1934, before moving to the Foro Italico in Rome in 1935.  Having said that, there was a break in the competition from 1936 to 1949, but it resumed in 1950.  Consequently, in 1961, the tournament took place in Turin at the Sporting Club. Over the years, it has undergone several name changes, including the Italian International Championships, the Rome Masters, and the BNL d’Italia, primarily for sponsorship purposes.
